The most important spare parts for a faithful restoration of the 1VJ.
History
The 1VJ series marks the second generation of the XT600Z Ténéré, which was built from 1986 to 1987. For the first time, Yamaha equipped an XT600Z with an electric starter in addition to the kick starter. The center of gravity was lowered by a new 23-liter tank. The (rated) power increased to around 46 hp. With its typical Ténéré rally look, front disc brake, and rear Monocross suspension, it was designed as a versatile enduro motorcycle. Advantages
Powerful engine with high torque: solid acceleration and comfortable handling, even on long distances
Off-road chassis: reliable even off-road thanks to good suspension and high ground clearance
Legendary rally look: still very popular today, often considered the most beautiful version of the XT600Z Ténéré
Electric starter: more convenient for starting off-road
Disadvantages
Risk of overheating due to a poorly positioned and undersized oil cooler and a fender without ventilation slots. In addition, the very low tank often led to heat accumulation around the cylinder and cylinder head, which damaged the engine
Susceptible to corrosion: The exhaust and certain parts of the frame were particularly prone to rust
Conclusion
The XT 600Z 1VJ is a classic that left its mark on its era: robust, off-road capable, and aesthetically pleasing. Its fundamental weaknesses—engine cooling and rust—can be overcome with targeted modifications. If you master heat management, you will have a reliable and iconic enduro for adventure.
